Working Memory allows us to remember and process information. We also use working memory to act appropriately in classroom settings. Because of poor Working Memory, children with ADHD can’t remember information because they can’t focus on it long enough to make it stick. They can’t process what little they can remember, because when they try, their thought processes are disrupted. When they should be listening to the teacher, all too often they are acting out their impulses.

ADHD and Working Memory in the Classroom
Miss Zane, a fifth grade teacher from Anaheim school district in California, read out a word problem to the class for them to copy down: ‘Bob had 3 apples. His friend Timmy gave him 2 more apples. How many apples does Bob have?’
Jim, a student diagnosed with ADHD, had gotten out of his seat when Miss Zane was explaining what to do, so he was already at a disadvantage. He glanced at his classmate’s paper, wrote down ‘Bob’ and ‘3 apples’, but couldn’t remember the rest because he started thinking about what he had in his lunchbox. Remembering there was something he needed to do, he looked over at his classmate’s paper again, but by then Miss Zane had started reading a new problem. So, he started to write it down, but mixed it up with the first problem and ended up getting both of them wrong.
Jim’s poor Working Memory didn’t allow him to say no to the impulse to let his attention drift to lunch, it didn’t allow him to remember the full question, and it didn’t allow him to concentrate solving it. -

Karen, a bright 8-year-old student in Scotland, was extremely articulate and bright in conversation. She was always talkative whenever she spoke in class. But, if there was an activity that required her to read either from a book or from the board, she was very quiet and withdrawn. She often set her pencil down and gave up before completing the assignment. She was a very slow reader. Dyspraxia and Working Memory in the Classroom
Tom, a 13-year-old freshman, was finding high school difficult. While he had been able to just squeeze through in junior high, the detailed subjects were getting the better of him. He found that not only was he expected to memorize the information, he had to work with it in more complex ways than previously. Poor Working Memory is at the heart of Low Grades
Scientific studies show that 1 in 10 children have a poor Working Memory, which causes Low Grades.* Working Memory is the foundation of learning. Our ability to remember and process information allows us to understand the complexities of a wide range of subjects. While most students may be able to recognize letters, some struggle with mentally processing these letters into words, slowing them down during reading. They also can forget the letters as they look from their paper to the board when copying information. While many recognize numbers, they get bogged down when thinking through math problems and abandon the task. By improving their Working Memory, they will be able to remember and process information at the same time, dramatically improving their opportunities for success.

Low Grades and Working Memory in the Classroom
Laurie was socially intelligent, and was very popular with her classmates, and always had a joke to hand. But, she struggled in the classroom. She was always the last one to finish her assignments, she made mistakes when copying from the board, and she usually forget the right book for her lessons. She didn’t have a specific learning disability, like dyslexia or ADHD, and her parents knew that she could do better. When Mrs. Schmidt wrote down a math problem on the blackboard, (5+4)6-7=? and asked her students to write it down and solve it. Laurie started writing the number ‘5’ but lost her place and then wrote ‘-7’. She thought there were more numbers in the problems, so she looked up, and wrote down 6+4. Now, the problem on her paper didn’t look at all like the problem on the board and she didn’t realize it until she tried to solve it. By the time she looked up again, more problems had been written down on the board, and she forgot the one she was working on. Laurie’s poor working memory meant that she couldn’t remember the information and so she got bogged down when trying to solve the math problems.
